Turkish Vowel Harmony: The Key That Unlocks the Language

One of the first things you'll notice when learning Turkish is vowel harmony — a beautiful rule that makes Turkish words flow naturally. Once you understand it, whole chunks of grammar become predictable and logical.

Turkish has 8 vowels: a, e, ı, i, o, ö, u, ü. They fall into two groups:

• Back vowels: a, ı, o, u
• Front vowels: e, i, ö, ü

The rule is simple: suffixes must match the last vowel of the word they attach to. If the root has a back vowel, the suffix uses a back vowel. If the root has a front vowel, the suffix uses a front vowel.

For example, the plural suffix is -lar or -ler:

• kitap (book) → kitaplar (books) — back vowel
• ev (house) → evler (houses) — front vowel

This pattern extends to every suffix in Turkish. Once it clicks, you'll find yourself correctly forming words you've never seen before.
